Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, emphasized the need for a balanced regulatory approach in developing artificial intelligence (AI) in India. Speaking at the International Telecommunication Union's Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) 2025, Scindia highlighted the importance of supporting innovation while ensuring AI products and services prioritize safety, ethics, and inclusion.
Scindia stressed the need for policies that support innovation without hindering development, while ensuring safety, ethics, and inclusion. He outlined three key parameters for regulators, including being a proactive ecosystem designer, creating regulatory sandboxes to stress-test new ideas, and building trust by focusing on people-centric policies, grievance redressal mechanisms, and strong data protection standards.
The minister emphasized India's approach to AI development, prioritizing human values and potential, and leveraging AI in sectors like agriculture, health, education, and governance. He also highlighted the importance of international collaboration and standards in promoting innovation and ensuring AI serves as a "force for good".
Scindia noted India's technological advancements, including the rapid rollout of 5G networks and the development of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Aadhaar, and DigiLocker. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive policy framework that addresses technical demands and socio-economic implications of emerging technologies like 6G. By adopting a balanced regulatory approach, India can harness the potential of AI while ensuring its development is aligned with human values and societal needs.
