Artificial Intelligence Substitutes Human Cognitive Processes: Psychiatrist

In a recent discussion organized by the NGO IT for Change in Bengaluru, child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Shekhar Seshadri addressed the ethical and psychological implications of artificial intelligence (AI). He expressed concern that while AI offers efficiencies, it may replace essential human cognitive functions such as introspection and self-inquiry. Traditionally, these processes have been nurtured through practices like journaling, meditation, and therapy, but AI tools now provide predetermined summaries of one's mood, behaviors, and thoughts, potentially diminishing personal reflection.

Dr. Seshadri emphasized that algorithms, particularly those used in social media and commercial platforms, are designed to increase user engagement and profitability. These recommendation algorithms can personalize content based on user data, leading to issues like body image concerns and mental health consequences, especially among vulnerable populations such as adolescent girls. He cautioned that AI-driven therapeutic platforms might fail to recognize the nuances of human distress, highlighting the need for human-centered approaches in mental health care.

The psychiatrist advocated for "algorithmic literacy," urging individuals to critically understand how AI shapes their self-perception and interactions with the world. He stressed that AI and algorithms cannot assume responsibility for emotional reflection, and that human input remains crucial in addressing complex psychological issues.

This discussion underscores the importance of balancing technological advancements with human-centered approaches to mental health. As AI continues to integrate into various aspects of life, it is essential to ensure that it complements rather than replaces human cognitive processes, particularly in the realm of emotional and psychological well-being.
