The Australian government has officially joined more than 80 nations in endorsing the India AI Impact Summit Declaration, a global framework adopted at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 held in New Delhi. This reflects Australia’s commitment to ensuring that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies deliver benefits broadly and responsibly, both domestically and internationally. The summit brought together world leaders, policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers to advance shared principles for AI innovation and governance.
By endorsing the declaration, Australia reaffirmed its support for multilateral collaboration on AI development that aligns with its National AI Plan — which aims to harness AI opportunities, spread benefits widely, and protect citizens by shaping global norms consistent with Australian values. Australia’s participation extends beyond endorsement to showcasing its AI ecosystem, with over 15 Australian companies exhibiting innovations and researchers contributing to summit discussions, including work on the International AI Safety Report.
The declaration itself outlines seven thematic pillars for international cooperation on AI — including development of human capital, social inclusion, trusted and secure AI systems, scientific advancement, democratising AI resources, and using AI for economic growth and social good. These themes echo global aspirations to make AI accessible, trustworthy, and beneficial for all societies, especially as countries navigate challenges like ethical governance, equitable access, and resilient infrastructure.
Australia’s support signals a broader global consensus on responsible AI, with countries across different regions — including major economies such as the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and members of the European Union — also endorsing the New Delhi Declaration. This collective commitment highlights how international partnerships are shaping AI’s future not just as a technological force, but as a collaborative tool for social and economic development worldwide.
