Australia unveils a “National AI Plan” to build an AI‑enabled economy

The government of Australia has launched a comprehensive National AI Plan, laying out a roadmap to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence across the economy — aiming to help citizens and businesses harness AI’s potential while safeguarding safety and inclusivity.

At its core, the plan has three main goals: first, to “capture opportunities,” by investing in digital and physical infrastructure and positioning Australia as a global destination for AI innovation; second, to “spread the benefits,” by promoting AI adoption in public services, SMEs, schools, community organisations, and ensuring even disadvantaged or remote communities gain access; and third, to prioritise “safety,” via establishing a new AI Safety Institute (AISI) — expected in early 2026 — tasked with analysing and monitoring emerging AI capabilities, risks and harms.

To support these aims, the plan invests heavily in building human and institutional capacity: this includes training and upskilling through efforts such as the national AI‑literacy programmes in schools, universities and community organisations; tailored support for small and medium enterprises via the National AI Centre (NAIC); and schemes to help non‑profits, regional organisations, and underrepresented groups adopt AI responsibly.

The reaction from industry experts has been largely positive. For example, PwC Australia welcomed the plan and the establishment of AISI, suggesting that these steps provide a balanced approach — enabling innovation while maintaining public trust, fairness, transparency and accountability.
