Can Artificial Intelligence Reduce Learning Poverty?

Learning poverty refers to the inability of students to read and understand age-appropriate text, and it affects millions of learners worldwide. Researchers are exploring whether artificial intelligence (AI) can help address this problem by improving literacy and learning outcomes. A recent study examined how AI-powered educational tools could support students struggling with reading and writing skills in higher education.

In the study, students used AI tools such as NoRedInk, Rewordify, and LanguageTool during a three-month learning program. These tools provided personalized grammar exercises, simplified complex texts, and offered automated feedback on writing. After the AI integration, students’ literacy scores increased significantly, with improvements seen in grammar accuracy, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and essay organization.

Students also reported better understanding of academic texts and greater confidence in expressing ideas. AI did not replace teachers; instead, it acted as a support system that provided instant feedback and additional practice. This combination of human teaching and AI tools helped students refine their reading and writing skills while staying actively involved in the learning process.

However, researchers caution that AI alone cannot solve learning poverty. Success depends on proper integration into education systems, teacher training, digital infrastructure, and equitable access to technology. When used strategically as a supplement to traditional instruction, AI has the potential to become a powerful tool for reducing literacy gaps and improving learning outcomes.
