China Leads in AI Adoption, with 83% Using Generative AI, Survey Shows

China is leading the world in adopting generative AI, with 83% of Chinese respondents in a survey saying they use the technology, surpassing the global average of 54%. This is according to a survey of 1,600 decision-makers in industries worldwide by U.S. AI and analytics software company SAS and Coleman Parkes Research.

The survey also found that China is ahead of other countries, including the United States, where 65% of respondents said they had adopted generative AI. The rapid progress of China in the generative AI field is also reflected in the number of patents filed, with China filing more than 38,000 patents between 2014 and 2023, compared to 6,276 filed by the United States in the same period.

The adoption of generative AI in China is expected to accelerate, driven by a price war that is likely to reduce the cost of large language model services for businesses. However, concerns have been raised about the use of generative AI in China, particularly with regards to privacy and surveillance.
