Chinese Automakers Are Betting That Robots Could Become More Profitable Than Cars

A growing number of Chinese automakers are moving into humanoid robotics, following Tesla’s strategy of treating robots as a potential business beyond electric vehicles. XPeng’s robotics division recently raised more than $900 million at a valuation above $6.3 billion, while Chery’s AiMOGA is preparing for a possible IPO and BYD has unveiled its own humanoid robot. Changan, GAC, Li Auto, SAIC and Seres are also developing robots.

The logic is partly economic. Electric-vehicle margins are becoming increasingly competitive, while robots could eventually offer higher margins and recurring software revenue. XPeng is particularly aggressive: its Iron humanoid robot is designed for commercial deployment, and the company's leadership believes robotics could become more attractive than cars. XPeng's founders reportedly invested around $100 million of their own money into the latest robotics financing round, showing how seriously they view the opportunity.

Chinese automakers also have a potentially important advantage: they already possess much of the physical manufacturing ecosystem needed for robotics—batteries, motors, sensors, electronics, factories and supply chains. The harder problem is AI. Building a capable robot requires systems that can perceive the physical world, learn tasks and operate reliably in unpredictable environments. Analysts therefore see the competition as partly a question of whether Chinese manufacturers can match Tesla and other leading companies on the AI side while leveraging their manufacturing strength.

The broader takeaway is that automakers increasingly see themselves as robotics companies rather than purely vehicle companies. If humanoids become commercially useful, car manufacturers could repurpose their existing engineering and production capabilities to address a much larger market for physical automation. But the opportunity remains highly speculative: current humanoids still face major challenges around intelligence, adaptability, cost and real-world reliability. The real race is therefore not simply to build the most impressive robot, but to create a robot that can perform useful work cheaply and reliably enough to generate repeatable profits.
