Chinese Firms Shift AI Chip Spending From Nvidia to Domestic Suppliers

Chinese companies are rapidly increasing their investment in domestically produced AI chips, reducing their reliance on Nvidia as U.S. export restrictions reshape the country's AI hardware market. According to a Bloomberg Intelligence survey, Chinese firms expect to allocate 46% of their AI accelerator budgets to local chipmakers over the next year, up from about 30% today. The shift reflects both supply constraints on Nvidia's products and Beijing's push for greater technological self-reliance.

China's biggest beneficiaries are expected to be domestic technology leaders such as Huawei, Cambricon, and Hygon, along with major AI infrastructure providers including Tencent and Alibaba, which are increasingly building AI systems around locally developed hardware. Companies are evaluating Chinese AI accelerators not only because of government support but also due to improving performance and availability compared with restricted foreign alternatives.

The transition does not mean Nvidia is disappearing from China, but its market position is expected to weaken as access to its most advanced AI chips remains limited. Many Chinese organizations continue to use Nvidia hardware where possible, yet they are increasingly diversifying their suppliers to reduce dependence on imported technology and ensure long-term stability amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The survey highlights a broader transformation in China's AI ecosystem, where domestic chipmakers are becoming central to the country's AI ambitions. As local hardware matures and government policies continue to encourage homegrown innovation, China is steadily building a more self-sufficient AI supply chain that could reshape competition in the global semiconductor industry.
