Congress is Interested in Expanding AI Training for Federal Workers

Congress is pushing to expand AI training for federal workers, with Representatives Nancy Mace (R-SC) and Shontel Brown (D-OH) introducing the AI Training Extension Act of 2025. The bill aims to provide AI training to more federal employees, including managers, supervisors, and those working in data and tech roles.

The proposed training would update and expand the 2022 AI training curriculum, focusing on practical modules such as AI capabilities, risks, privacy, and security considerations. The training materials would align with federal guidance from the Office of Management and Budget under existing AI legislation.

The bill also allows AI training to be incorporated into other training programs deemed fit by officials. This move is seen as a step towards ensuring federal workers are equipped to harness the benefits of AI while navigating its challenges.

It's worth noting that a similar bill, the AI Training Expansion Act of 2023, was proposed by Mace but didn't advance to a full House vote. The current bill faces uncertainty, with passage far from guaranteed.

Additionally, Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and Mike Braun (R-IN) have introduced the Artificial Intelligence Leadership Training Act, which would create an AI training program for federal supervisors and management officials to ensure they understand AI's potential benefits and risks.
