DeepSeek Becomes China’s Most Valuable AI Startup After $7.4 Billion Fundraise

Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has become the country's most valuable AI company after raising more than $7.4 billion in its first external funding round. The financing values the company at over $50 billion, marking one of the largest startup fundraising rounds in Chinese technology history and cementing DeepSeek's position as a leading contender in the global AI race.

A notable aspect of the deal is the unusual structure designed to preserve founder control. Founder Liang Wenfeng, who previously owned nearly 90% of the company, reportedly contributed around $3 billion of his own capital and retained control through a limited-partnership arrangement. Most outside investors invested through a vehicle managed by Liang rather than directly into the company, and they are subject to a five-year lock-up period with limited governance rights.

The funding round attracted some of China's largest corporations and strategic investors. Major participants reportedly include Tencent, CATL, JD.com, NetEase, as well as China's National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund. The strong backing reflects growing confidence in DeepSeek's technology and its importance to China's broader ambitions for AI self-sufficiency amid ongoing U.S. technology restrictions.

DeepSeek gained international recognition after its AI models demonstrated performance comparable to leading Western systems while using fewer resources and embracing an open-source approach. The company has worked closely with domestic chipmakers, including Huawei, to optimize AI workloads on Chinese hardware, supporting Beijing's goal of reducing dependence on foreign technology. The latest funding is expected to accelerate research and development, expand computing infrastructure, and support the creation of advanced agentic AI systems and future AGI-oriented research.

While DeepSeek's valuation remains below those of industry leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic, the fundraising underscores China's determination to build globally competitive AI champions. The deal also signals that investors increasingly view AI as a strategic industry, with DeepSeek emerging as one of the most important companies in China's effort to challenge U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence.
