Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has sparked interest by claiming that Sanskrit is a "scientific" language and the "most computer-friendly language." Citing a 1985 paper by NASA researcher Rick Briggs, Gupta asserts that Sanskrit has potential applications in coding and artificial intelligence.
Briggs' paper, "Knowledge Representation in Sanskrit and Artificial Intelligence," explored Sanskrit's potential as an artificial language. The paper highlighted the work of ancient Sanskrit grammarians who developed a method for paraphrasing Sanskrit similar to current AI work.
Gupta's statements aim to promote Sanskrit and challenge societal biases that view fluency in foreign languages as a sign of intelligence while dismissing Sanskrit. The Delhi government has initiated free Sanskrit classes across the city in collaboration with NGO Samskrita Bharati, to make the language more accessible.
While Gupta's claims about Sanskrit's potential for coding and AI are intriguing, the actual implementation and practical applications of Sanskrit in these fields remain to be seen.
