Gartner has made some bold predictions about the future of generative AI (GenAI). By 2027, more than 50% of the GenAI models used by enterprises will be specific to either an industry or business function, up from approximately 1% in 2023.
Another key prediction is that synthetic data will solve various existing data challenges. By 2026, 75% of businesses will use generative AI to create synthetic customer data, up from less than 5% in 2023. This will enable organizations to simulate environments, identify new product development opportunities, and train machine learning models.
In terms of sustainability, Gartner predicts that by 2028, 30% of GenAI implementations will be optimized using energy-conserving computational methods, driven by sustainability initiatives.
On the spending front, Gartner expects global spending on generative AI to reach $644 billion in 2025, a 76.4% increase from 2024. Despite some high-profile failures, generative AI spending is expected to continue growing until at least 2028.
