Germany Plans AI Offensive to Catch Up on Key Technologies

Germany is launching an AI offensive to boost its economy and compete globally in key technologies. The country's research ministry has drafted a strategy to generate 10% of its economic output from AI by 2030, making AI a crucial tool in central research fields. This move aims to help Germany catch up with AI frontrunners like the US, China, and India.

The German cabinet is expected to pass the strategy soon, setting ambitious targets to catch up with the US and China on AI. The plan includes developing two "error-corrected quantum computers" by 2030 and making them available to users. Additionally, Germany will launch its first research satellite for quantum communication this year.

The strategy also involves constructing high-capacity processing centers, or "AI gigafactories," in the EU. The European Commission is expected to allocate $23 billion in funding for this initiative. Economists recommend rapid AI roll-out to boost productivity, potentially increasing it by 0.9% annually from 2025 to 2030 and 1.2% in the 2030s.

Germany aims to link AI research to industries like robotics, mechanical engineering, and car manufacturing to drive innovation and competitiveness. By investing in AI and quantum computing, Germany hopes to strengthen its economy and become a major player in the global AI landscape.
