Global AI Standards to be Adopted Once Finalized, Says Consumer Affairs Secretary

Global AI ethics standards are being developed and will be adopted once finalized, according to Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare. Currently, 39 global AI standards exist, with 45 more in development. These standards aim to ensure the responsible, inclusive, and ethical use of AI.

Khare emphasized that governments will likely be forced to come out with legal frameworks once global standards are set to prevent consumers from getting manipulated or cheated. She expressed concerns over AI's potential misuse, such as spreading propaganda, and highlighted the need for governments to protect consumers.

Despite the challenges, Khare acknowledged AI's positive contributions, particularly in social media platforms and innovation. She noted that AI has the potential to combat fraud in retail and e-commerce, but also poses risks if used unethically.

India is actively participating in international standards-setting committees, shaping global AI standards. This positions the country to influence AI governance worldwide. As global AI standards continue to evolve, it's crucial for governments, industries, and civil societies to work together to ensure the responsible development and use of AI.
