Google has outlined a broad strategy for fighting online fraud, arguing that artificial intelligence must be used not only by consumers and businesses but also as a defensive tool against increasingly sophisticated scammers. The company says AI-powered protections are now being deployed across Search, Chrome, Android, Messages, and other services to identify and block fraudulent activity in real time.
A major focus is detecting scams before users encounter them. Google reports that its AI systems help block hundreds of millions of scam-related search results each day and have significantly improved the company's ability to identify fraudulent websites, phishing campaigns, and impersonation attempts. The company says advances in AI-driven detection have enabled it to catch far more scam content than previous systems.
Google is also expanding AI-powered protections directly on user devices. Recent initiatives include scam detection in Google Messages, real-time warnings for suspicious calls, fake-call detection aimed at deepfake impersonation scams, and enhanced protections in Chrome. Many of these features operate on-device, allowing threats to be detected without sending sensitive user data to external servers.
The announcement comes as AI-enabled fraud becomes a growing global concern. Google recently filed lawsuits against cybercriminal groups accused of using AI tools to create phishing websites and scam campaigns at scale. The company says combating AI-driven fraud will require collaboration among technology firms, governments, telecom providers, law enforcement agencies, and international organizations to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated threats.
