Google has announced a significant investment of $15 billion to establish its largest artificial intelligence (AI) hub outside the United States in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This landmark development, discussed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will combine gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure. The AI hub is expected to drive growth across the country, accelerate AI innovation, and create substantial economic and societal opportunities for both India and the US.
The project will be developed in partnership with AdaniConneX, a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX, alongside Airtel as a key partner. The facility will incorporate advanced infrastructure used to power Google products such as Search, Workspace, and YouTube. According to Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, the new centre would transform Visakhapatnam into a global hub for AI innovation, serving India and the broader Asian region.
This investment aligns with the Indian government's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision to expand AI-driven services and represents a major step in strengthening India-US digital cooperation. The initiative is expected to create up to 1.8 lakh direct and indirect jobs across technology, clean energy, and construction sectors while strengthening the state's energy infrastructure. The project will also include co-investments in transmission lines, clean energy generation, and innovative energy storage systems in Andhra Pradesh.
The Visakhapatnam AI hub will integrate state-of-the-art computing, AI infrastructure, and renewable energy systems, empowering startups, universities, and enterprises with access to high-performance AI computing resources. With this investment, Google aims to democratize technology, deliver cutting-edge tools to citizens, boost the digital economy, and secure India's place as a global technology leader.
