Google, Meta Execs Blast Europe Over Strict AI Regulation

Google and Meta executives are criticizing Europe's strict AI regulations, warning that they will stifle innovation and hinder the region's competitiveness. The executives argue that the regulations, such as the EU's AI Act, are too restrictive and will prevent the development and deployment of cutting-edge AI technologies.

In an open letter, Meta, Ericsson, and other tech companies expressed concerns that the EU's fragmented approach to AI regulation will lead to uncertainty and hinder innovation. They warned that this will deprive Europeans of technological advances enjoyed in other regions, such as the US, China, and India.

Google has also spoken out against the UK's laws preventing AI training on copyrighted materials. The company suggests that allowing copyrighted data to be used for commercial AI training would unlock the UK's AI potential.

The criticism comes as the EU's AI Act has officially entered into force, requiring companies to meet transparency requirements and conduct safety tests before launching AI products. While the regulations aim to protect consumers, tech companies argue that they will hinder innovation and competitiveness.
