Google Showcases How AI Is Strengthening Global Crisis Resilience

Google has outlined how its latest AI technologies are helping governments, humanitarian organizations, and emergency responders better prepare for and respond to natural disasters. The company says its AI-powered tools support the entire crisis management cycle—from forecasting severe weather and issuing early warnings to coordinating disaster response and assessing damage after emergencies. The goal is to give communities more time and better information to protect lives and critical infrastructure.

One of the key examples is WeatherNext, Google's advanced weather forecasting model. During the 2025 hurricane season, the U.S. National Hurricane Center used the model to predict Hurricane Melissa's landfall in Jamaica five days in advance, allowing local authorities to issue earlier public warnings. Google is also collaborating with the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) to use AI-powered satellite imagery analysis, enabling humanitarian organizations to quickly identify damaged areas and deliver aid more efficiently after disasters.

Beyond forecasting, Google is expanding AI applications for climate resilience through initiatives such as FireSat, a satellite network designed to detect wildfires while they are still very small, and by open-sourcing its AI-based hydrology framework to improve flood forecasting worldwide. These efforts are intended to help governments and emergency agencies respond more rapidly and make better-informed decisions before and during natural disasters.

Google says its crisis resilience strategy relies on close collaboration with governments, international organizations, researchers, and local communities rather than AI alone. By combining advanced AI models, satellite technology, and real-time environmental data, the company aims to improve disaster preparedness, accelerate emergency response, and reduce the human and economic impact of increasingly frequent climate-related events.
