India and Japan Deepen Strategic Partnership with New AI, Defense, and Economic Security Agreements

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi used the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit in New Delhi to strengthen cooperation across defense, economic security, and advanced technologies. The leaders announced a series of agreements covering artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical technologies, shipbuilding, clean energy, and maritime security, reflecting the growing strategic alignment between the two Indo-Pacific partners.

A major outcome of the summit was the adoption of a joint roadmap on economic security and an agreement to collaborate on naval radio antenna systems, marking the first defense co-development arrangement between the two countries. The leaders also committed to expanding cooperation in AI, semiconductor supply chains, critical minerals, biogas, and energy resilience. These initiatives are intended to reduce supply-chain vulnerabilities while strengthening technological competitiveness.

Economic ties also received a significant boost. Japan remains one of India's largest foreign investors, with about 1,400 Japanese companies operating in India. During the summit, both governments reaffirmed their goal of attracting ¥10 trillion (over US$61 billion) in Japanese investment into India over the next decade. Recent business agreements are expected to bring more than US$10 billion in new investments, particularly in AI, advanced manufacturing, infrastructure, and clean energy. Bilateral trade reached approximately US$27.5 billion in fiscal year 2025–26.

Strategically, the summit underscored the countries' shared commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific. While China was not directly named in the joint announcements, the expanded cooperation reflects mutual concerns over regional security, supply-chain resilience, and technological competition. By combining Japan's strengths in advanced manufacturing and precision engineering with India's software expertise and growing digital economy, both countries aim to build a deeper long-term partnership spanning defense, AI, economic security, and emerging technologie
