India Expands AI Across Healthcare to Improve Access, Diagnosis, and Patient Care

India is rapidly integrating artificial intelligence into its healthcare system to improve the accessibility, quality, and affordability of medical services. The government is deploying AI across disease detection, telemedicine, diagnostics, surveillance, and public health programs to strengthen healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved regions. Officials say AI is helping bridge gaps caused by shortages of medical specialists while supporting early diagnosis, better clinical decisions, and remote patient care.

AI has already delivered measurable results across several national health initiatives. AI-powered tools in the National TB Elimination Programme have contributed to a 27% reduction in adverse tuberculosis outcomes, while the e-Sanjeevani telemedicine platform recorded 282 million consultations between April 2023 and November 2025, including 12 million AI-assisted diagnoses. The government's Media Disease Surveillance system has also generated more than 4,500 outbreak alerts by using AI to detect disease patterns from digital news sources.

India is also applying AI to specialized healthcare areas. DeepCXR helps detect tuberculosis from chest X-rays, MadhuNetrAI enables early screening for diabetic retinopathy, and AI is being used to detect health insurance fraud under the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme. The government is further supporting cancer detection through a national imaging biobank and integrating AI with traditional medicine through initiatives such as Ayurgenomics and the Ayush Grid, which combine genomic research with Ayurveda.

The expansion is supported by the IndiaAI Mission and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which provide the digital infrastructure needed for AI-enabled healthcare. With hundreds of millions of digital health records now available and dedicated AI Centers of Excellence established at leading medical institutions, India is positioning AI as a cornerstone of its long-term healthcare strategy. The government says continued investments in infrastructure, ethical governance, and public-private collaboration will help make healthcare more efficient, accessible, and equitable for millions of citizens.
