India Is Shaping a Global Framework for Ethical and Human-Centric AI

Narendra Modi announced that India is taking a lead role in crafting an international governance model for artificial intelligence (AI) that emphasises ethics, human-centred values and broad societal benefit. At the Emerging Science, Technology & Innovation Conclave 2025, he stated that India’s forthcoming “AI Governance Framework” will seek to marry innovation with safety, ensuring that AI serves every section of society.

He noted that AI is already pervasive—spanning retail, logistics, customer service and even students’ homework—and argued that its potential must be shaped responsibly so that none are left behind. He referenced India’s investment of over ₹10,000 crore under the India AI Mission and stressed the importance of inclusive access and ethical deployment.

In addition, Modi announced that India will host the Global AI Summit in February 2026, which he said will boost momentum on a global scale towards “inclusive, ethical and human-centric AI.”

In sum, India is positioning itself not only as a large user of AI technologies but as a key voice in shaping how AI is governed. The emphasis is on values, standards, and frameworks—alongside innovation—so that as the technology advances it remains aligned with societal goals and democratic principles.
