The Indian government has released a comprehensive governance framework to guide AI adoption nationwide, focusing on rapid innovation while ensuring robust public safeguards. The guidelines are built on seven core principles: trust, human‑centric design, fairness, accountability, transparency, responsible innovation, and sustainability.
The blueprint outlines a six‑pillar strategy covering infrastructure, capacity building, policy and regulation, risk mitigation, accountability, and institutional coordination. It aims to expand access to high-quality datasets, subsidized computing power, and integrate AI capabilities with India’s Digital Public Infrastructure to support sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, and governance.
The framework also emphasizes extensive skilling initiatives to improve AI literacy among citizens, regulators, and public officials, preparing institutions for responsible AI deployment. It notes that many AI-related risks, such as privacy breaches, deepfakes, and algorithmic bias, can be addressed under existing laws, while recommending targeted regulatory updates on data protection, digital platforms, and copyright.
To operationalize this framework, the blueprint proposes a national-level institutional architecture including a dedicated “AI Governance Group,” a “Technology and Policy Expert Committee,” and an “AI Safety Institute.” These bodies will coordinate policy, develop technical and legal standards, evaluate risks, and oversee the safe deployment of AI across sectors, making India’s AI strategy both ambitious and accountable.
