India Plans AI Oversight Board, Mandates Training for Bureaucrats

India is taking a significant step towards responsible AI adoption in governance. The government plans to establish an AI Governance Board to oversee AI-driven projects in public services, ensuring they align with ethical and legal standards. This board will assess, approve, and monitor AI applications across government agencies.

To prepare bureaucrats for this new era, the government is mandating AI training for officials. A three-tier training program has been introduced, catering to senior policymakers, mid-level officials, and implementation teams. This program aims to develop a critical understanding of AI's risks, ethics, and security concerns among government officials.

The Indian government has already made significant strides in leveraging AI for public services. For instance, the National Health Stack aims to create a centralized healthcare system, while the e-Office platform automates routine tasks and reduces bureaucratic red tape. With AI projected to contribute $450-500 billion to India's GDP by 2025, the government is actively fostering AI adoption while ensuring responsible deployment.
