Indian firms lead global peers in AI adoption but lag in expertise: Deloitte

Indian companies are emerging as global leaders in adopting artificial intelligence at scale, according to a Deloitte report. Many firms in India have moved beyond experimentation and are now deploying AI across core business functions. Around 40% of Indian organizations report significant or full AI usage, compared to a global average of about 28%, showing that India is ahead in operationalizing AI for real business outcomes.

AI adoption in India is particularly strong in areas that directly impact growth and efficiency. The report highlights high deployment in product development (62%), strategy and operations (56%), marketing and sales (55%), and supply chain (48%). This indicates that Indian firms are not just testing AI but embedding it deeply into decision-making and productivity systems.

However, this rapid adoption comes with a major challenge: a shortage of skilled AI talent and expertise. Despite leading in usage, Indian firms lag behind global peers in terms of specialized capabilities needed to build, manage, and scale advanced AI systems. This gap could limit long-term competitiveness if not addressed through training, hiring, and investment in skills development.

Overall, the report presents a mixed picture—India is ahead in embracing AI but still catching up in mastering it. To fully capitalize on its leadership in adoption, the country will need to focus on building deeper expertise, strengthening talent pipelines, and investing in advanced AI capabilities that go beyond implementation to innovation.
