India’s Data-Centre Capacity Could Triple by 2030

India’s data-centre industry is entering a major expansion phase, with capacity expected to triple to around 5–6 GW by 2030, according to the Financial Express. The growth is being driven primarily by AI workloads, cloud computing, digital services and data-localisation requirements. Mumbai currently accounts for roughly half of India's installed capacity, but the next phase of development is expected to spread to other cities and regions as demand for computing infrastructure increases.

AI is becoming one of the most important reasons for this investment because generative AI and AI agents require enormous amounts of computing power and storage. Training and running increasingly capable models requires specialised GPUs, high-density servers, networking infrastructure and reliable electricity. India's growing digital economy adds another layer of demand, while data-localisation requirements encourage companies to keep more workloads and information within the country.

The expansion also creates a major energy and infrastructure challenge. Data centres consume large quantities of electricity and require sophisticated cooling systems, making access to reliable power and suitable infrastructure increasingly important. As capacity moves beyond established hubs such as Mumbai, developers will need to consider power availability, connectivity, land, water and the broader economics of building large computing facilities in new locations.

The broader takeaway is that India's AI ambitions are becoming a physical-infrastructure story. Building AI applications is only one part of the equation; India also needs the data centres, chips, networks and electricity required to run them at scale. If capacity does reach 5–6 GW by 2030, the country could become a much more important regional AI-computing hub—but the success of that expansion will depend on whether infrastructure investment can keep pace with the rapidly growing demand for AI compute.
