India's First AI Legislators' Forum Launched to Bridge Gap Between AI Sector and Lawmaking Institutions

India has taken a significant step towards addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence (AI) with the launch of its first Artificial Intelligence Legislators' Forum (AILF). The forum, launched by Future Shift Labs, aims to bridge the gap between India's rapidly growing AI sector and its lawmaking institutions.

The AILF will provide a platform for lawmakers, technologists, and policy experts to come together and discuss issues related to AI, such as ethical frameworks, regulatory gaps, and challenges emerging from AI adoption. The forum's primary objective is to enable informed policymaking on AI governance and developmental aspects.

The launch event was attended by prominent MPs, including Sujeet Kumar, Shashank Mani, Rabindra Narayan Behera, and Lavu Krishna Devaralayu, who officially inaugurated the forum. During the event, a report titled "AI in Parliament: Mapping Legislative Engagement since 2014-2025" was unveiled, recommending expanded discussions on AI for future governance. Additionally, Rajya Sabha MP Sujeet Kumar's book "AI on Trial" was launched.

The AILF plans to conduct fellowships, workshops, and discussions for 30 legislators each year, designed to support informed policymaking on AI governance and developmental aspects. By doing so, the forum aims to create a dialogue between lawmakers and technologists, ultimately shaping policies that encourage innovation while ensuring accountability.

India's move to establish the AILF follows similar initiatives in other countries, such as the United Kingdom's All-Party Parliamentary Group on AI and the United States' Congressional AI Caucus. The launch of the AILF marks a significant step towards developing policies that address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in India.
