Iran’s Attacks on Amazon Data Centers Signal a New Kind of War

Recent drone strikes linked to Iran on Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have raised global concerns about how warfare is evolving in the age of artificial intelligence. The attacks damaged multiple facilities and caused localized cloud outages affecting businesses and services across the region. Analysts say the incident shows that digital infrastructure—especially data centers supporting AI and cloud computing—is becoming a strategic target in modern conflicts.

Two AWS facilities in the UAE were directly hit by drones, while another facility in Bahrain suffered damage from nearby strikes. The attacks caused structural damage, power disruptions, and service interruptions for some cloud systems such as storage and computing platforms. Although global services remained largely stable, companies operating in the Middle East experienced disruptions and were advised to shift workloads to other regions to maintain operations.

Experts say the strikes represent a new form of warfare focused on digital infrastructure. Data centers now power everything from banking and logistics to AI systems and military technologies, making them valuable strategic assets. As nations invest billions in AI computing infrastructure, targeting these facilities can disrupt economies and technological capabilities without attacking traditional military bases.

The attacks also highlight the vulnerability of the global cloud ecosystem. Even though cloud systems are designed with redundancy across multiple locations, they still rely on physical buildings filled with servers, power systems, and cooling equipment. Analysts warn that as AI becomes more central to national security and economic power, protecting data centers may become as important as defending energy plants, ports, or telecommunications networks in future conflicts.
