The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the creation of a new independent Department of Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence, marking a significant step in the state’s digital transformation agenda. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting in Mumbai chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This move is aimed at strengthening the state’s focus on AI adoption, digital governance, and technology-led development.
As part of the restructuring, the existing IT Directorate will be upgraded into the Commissionerate for Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence. The state will also establish a dedicated IT cadre with permanent positions at the Mantralaya, commissionerate, and district levels. This is expected to improve the implementation of e-governance initiatives and accelerate the use of AI-driven public services across Maharashtra.
The cabinet also cleared the formation of the Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC) as a company, which is expected to support areas such as city planning, road information systems, and water conservation schemes like Jalayukta Shivar. In addition, a geotechnology application centre will be created to strengthen the use of geospatial technologies in governance and infrastructure planning.
Overall, this decision reflects Maharashtra’s broader vision of becoming a technology-driven state under the “Viksit Maharashtra” and “Developed India 2047” framework. By creating a dedicated AI and IT department, the state aims to improve administrative efficiency, encourage innovation, and position itself as a leading hub for digital governance and emerging technologies in India.
