Meta Moves into New Territory with AI-Powered Humanoid Robots

Meta is making a bold move into the field of artificial intelligence-powered humanoid robots. The company plans to develop robots that can assist with household tasks, leveraging its expertise in AI and virtual reality. This initiative is part of Meta's broader vision to advance AI and automation, with the goal of enhancing efficiency and convenience for users.

To lead this project, Meta has appointed Marc Whitten, former CEO of Cruise, as Vice President of Robotics. Whitten will report to Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, and will have the resources to recruit approximately 100 engineers this year.

Meta's approach to humanoid robotics involves developing both the AI software and physical systems needed for autonomous, human-like machines. The company believes its AI and data from augmented and virtual reality devices can accelerate progress in humanoid robotics, which is still in its early stages.

Meta is focusing on developing advanced technologies such as hand tracking, low bandwidth computing, and always-on sensors to enable its robots to interact with their environment more effectively. The company's investment in humanoid robotics is expected to be substantial, with plans to spend $65 billion this year on related products, including AI infrastructure and new robot work.
