A new analysis from the Bank of America Institute reveals that only about 3% of U.S. households currently pay for AI services such as premium chatbot subscriptions. Despite the relatively low adoption rate, the number of paying households has risen sharply since mid-2025, suggesting that consumer demand for AI is steadily expanding as the technology becomes more useful in everyday life.
The report found that the typical AI subscriber spends around $20 per month, with most households paying $20 or less. However, spending is increasing, as the share of users paying between $21 and $40 per month has grown significantly since 2024. Analysts believe consumers are becoming more willing to pay for premium AI features that improve productivity, simplify tasks, and save time.
Higher-income households and younger generations, particularly Gen Z and younger Millennials, account for the largest share of AI subscribers. At the same time, AI spending is growing fastest among middle-income households, indicating that paid AI services are gradually moving beyond early adopters and becoming more mainstream. Popular uses include productivity, shopping assistance, travel planning, entertainment, and personal assistance.
Bank of America expects consumer AI spending to continue rising as AI becomes integrated into more digital products and subscription plans. The bank estimates that the U.S. consumer AI market could eventually reach $75 billion annually, driven by increasing demand for tools that enhance convenience, automate routine tasks, and improve everyday decision-making.
