Jony Ive, the legendary designer behind Apple's iconic products, has partnered with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to develop a new AI device. Ive's design firm, LoveFrom, is leading the design process, with the goal of creating a product that uses AI to provide a computing experience that's less socially disruptive than the iPhone.
Ive and Altman began discussing the project after meeting through Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, who had worked with LoveFrom on redesigning their review system. Although specifics about the device are scarce, it's expected to have a touchscreen element, and its design will be influenced by Ive's experience in creating intuitive and simple products.
The project has already secured significant funding, with Laurene Powell Jobs' Emerson Collective leading the investment round. The company aims to raise up to $1 billion by the end of the year. Ive has assembled a team of around 10 employees, including former Apple veterans Evans Hankey and Tang Tan, who will work out of an office in San Francisco.
Given LoveFrom's approach to design, the device is unlikely to be released anytime soon. This collaboration brings together Ive's design expertise and Altman's AI capabilities, potentially leading to a groundbreaking product that could revolutionize the way we interact with technology.
