OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is expanding its presence in India with plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year. This move underscores the company's commitment to tapping into India's rapidly growing AI market. India has become ChatGPT's largest international market, second only to the United States, with a four-fold jump in weekly active users in the past year alone.
The office will focus on strengthening relationships with local partners, governments, businesses, developers, and academic institutions. OpenAI has already started hiring a local team, with Pragya Misra leading public policy and partnerships in the country. The company aims to make advanced AI more accessible across India and build AI solutions tailored to the country's needs.
AI landscape is evident, with the country ranking among the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has emphasized the potential of India to become a global AI leader, citing the country's talented workforce, thriving developer ecosystem, and strong government support.
