OpenAI's GPUs Overheat as Demand for Ghibli-Style AI Art Skyrockets

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has revealed that the company's GPUs are overheating due to the massive demand for Ghibli-style AI art generated through ChatGPT. This surge in demand has forced OpenAI to introduce temporary rate limits on image generation to prevent their systems from crashing.

The viral trend, which started after OpenAI launched its native image generation feature in ChatGPT, has seen users creating and sharing thousands of images in the style of Studio Ghibli, a renowned Japanese animation studio. The feature, part of the GPT-4o model, allows users to recreate iconic moments in Studio Ghibli's art style.

To manage the demand, OpenAI will implement temporary rate limits on image generation, and free tier users will soon receive three generations per day. Altman apologized for the inconvenience, saying, "It's super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT, but our GPUs are melting."

The company is working on making the image generation feature more efficient, and Altman hopes the rate limits won't be in place for long. This development highlights the challenges of managing massive demand for AI-generated content and the need for infrastructure upgrades to support such trends.
