OpenAI’s Nonprofit Push Aims to Scale AI Use in India’s Social Sector

OpenAI has launched a workshop series in India, called the Nonprofit Jam, to help local nonprofit organisations move beyond small-scale experiments and deploy artificial intelligence tools at scale. The initiative focuses on enabling nonprofits to extend their impact across larger regions and diverse communities by integrating AI into their workflows.

The workshops, which began in Bengaluru, engage organisations serving rural and underserved populations, helping them apply AI to tasks such as lesson planning, automated grading, health triage, and community outreach. Many nonprofits have experimented with AI but face challenges in scaling due to limited data infrastructure, manual record-keeping, and talent shortages.

A key focus is ensuring AI supports human decision-making rather than replacing it, maintaining ethical and appropriate use. OpenAI is partnering with local organisations to provide hands-on sessions, build knowledge, and help nonprofits develop customised AI applications that improve operational efficiency and outcomes.
