Operating Rooms Get AI-Equipped in the UAE

“Operating Rooms Get AI-Equipped in the UAE” discusses Abu Dhabi’s major initiative to integrate artificial intelligence technologies into nearly 100 operating rooms across the emirate. The Department of Health Abu Dhabi is collaborating with Johnson & Johnson to deploy the Polyphonic surgical technology platform as part of its long-term strategy to build what officials describe as an “AI-native” healthcare system. The project aims to improve surgical outcomes, enhance operational efficiency, and use predictive technologies to guide future healthcare policies.

The new system will collect and analyze large amounts of surgical data, including video recordings, audio, patient imaging, monitor readings, and procedural information from operating rooms. Hospitals involved in the initiative include Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, PureHealth, Mediclinic, and NMC Healthcare. Initially, the platform will function primarily as a training and learning tool, allowing surgeons to review procedures, share surgical clips with colleagues, and evaluate areas for improvement. It will also digitize pre-operative coordination processes that are often managed through handwritten notes or messaging applications.

The long-term vision goes far beyond documentation and analysis. Developers hope the AI platform will eventually provide surgeons with real-time assistance during operations, similar to navigation systems used by airline pilots. The technology could help identify anatomical structures before surgery begins, reduce accidental injuries, and create a fully connected operating room where devices and data systems communicate continuously with medical teams. Abu Dhabi’s health authorities also plan to use aggregated surgical data to improve clinical guidelines and better understand factors that influence patient recovery outcomes.

The report highlights how the UAE is increasingly positioning artificial intelligence and healthcare data at the center of its national development strategy. Abu Dhabi already operates Malaffi, a unified health information platform connecting thousands of healthcare facilities across the emirate. By combining AI systems with centralized patient records and clinical data, the government hopes to strengthen preventive healthcare, improve policy decisions, and modernize medical services. The initiative reflects the UAE’s broader ambition to become a global leader in advanced healthcare technologies and AI-driven public services.
