A recent report by Ernst and Young-Parthenon, in collaboration with FICCI, reveals that over 60% of higher education institutions (HEIs) in India are permitting students to use AI tools. The report, titled "Future-Ready Campuses: Unlocking the Power of AI in Higher Education," is based on a survey of 30 leading HEIs across India. It examines AI adoption across core academic and operational functions, including usage patterns, governance readiness, curriculum innovation, and faculty development.

The report highlights that AI is already impacting curriculum design, assessment models, and classroom engagement strategies. Over 50% of HEIs are using generative AI to develop learning materials, while 40% are deploying AI-powered tutoring systems and chatbots. Additionally, 39% have introduced adaptive learning platforms, and 38% are leveraging AI for automated grading. Generative AI tools for creating teaching materials, AI-powered tutoring or chatbots, and personalized adaptive learning systems are emerging as top use cases.

  • AI Adoption: Over 56% of Indian HEIs have already implemented AI-related policies.
  • AI-Powered Tools: 40% of HEIs are deploying AI-powered tutoring systems and chatbots.
  • Adaptive Learning: 39% of HEIs have introduced adaptive learning platforms.
  • Automated Grading: 38% of HEIs are leveraging AI for automated grading.

The report emphasizes the need for clear classroom policies, thoughtful curriculum design, and updated institutional governance frameworks to support increased student interaction with AI. It also highlights the importance of embedding foundational AI literacy across programs to ensure all students develop a baseline competence in core AI concepts, ethical awareness, digital skills, critical thinking, and practical applications.
