Polish Programmer Beats OpenAI's Custom AI in 10-Hour Marathon, Wins World Coding Championship

Przemysław "Psyho" Dębiak, a 42-year-old Polish programmer and former OpenAI engineer, has made history by defeating OpenAI's custom AI model in the 2025 AtCoder World Tour Finals. The competition, held in Tokyo, was a 10-hour coding marathon where Dębiak edged out the AI model by approximately 9.5%, securing first place and a 500,000 yen prize.

The AtCoder World Tour Finals is a prestigious coding tournament that invites only the top 12 programmers worldwide, based on their performance throughout the previous year. This year, OpenAI participated as a sponsor and entered its custom AI model, OpenAIAHC, in a special exhibition match against human programmers.

Dębiak's win is significant, as it showcases human ingenuity and creativity in coding. He used Visual Studio Code with basic autocomplete during the contest and relied on his unique heuristic-driven approach, which emphasized problem-solving shortcuts and educated guesses. Contest administrator Yoichi Iwata praised Dębiak's method, noting that while the AI excelled at raw optimization, it "fell short of human creativity".

While Dębiak's victory is impressive, it's worth noting that AI's progress in coding is undeniable. According to Stanford's 2025 AI Index Report, AI systems' ability to solve coding problems jumped from 4.4% in 2023 to 71.7% in 2024. This raises questions about the future of human programmers and whether they will continue to outperform AI models in coding competitions.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman congratulated Dębiak on his win, saying "Good job, Psyho". Dębiak himself acknowledged the uncertainty of human dominance in coding, stating "Humanity has prevailed (for now!)" and expressing surprise at the widespread interest in programming contests.
