Regulations for artificial intelligence to help innovations thrive — Jitin Prasada

Union Minister of State Jitin Prasada — who holds portfolios in Electronics & Information Technology and Commerce & Industry — has said that India’s approach to regulating artificial intelligence (AI) aims to strike a careful balance between oversight and fostering innovation. Speaking at the Amazon Web Services (AWS) New Delhi Symposium 2026, the minister emphasised that AI regulations in India are not intended to over‑regulate, but rather to provide enough structure so that innovations can thrive without fear of stifling technological progress. He highlighted that the country’s policy frameworks are designed to enable broad participation in the AI revolution while maintaining clarity and flexibility for innovators.

Prasada underscored that India’s strategic advantage lies in its scale, speed, innovation, and inclusion, and that these strengths must be harnessed across all segments of society — including businesses, startups, researchers, and individuals at the grassroots level. He stressed that successful regulation should not block experimentation, but instead help ensure the benefits of AI reach everyone, especially those in the “bottom‑up” segments whose productivity, incomes, and standards of living could be transformed by technology.

In his remarks, the minister also pointed to ongoing efforts to enhance skills and capacity building alongside regulatory measures, noting collaborations like AWS and Nasscom’s initiative to skill 250,000 learners in AI and cloud technologies by 2027. By promoting accessible training and affordable technology resources — such as reducing barriers to GPU access for startups — Prasada said India is laying the groundwork for inclusive innovation that aligns with its regulatory approach.

Prasada’s comments reflect a broader Indian stance that AI governance should protect users and ethical norms without discouraging risk‑taking or creativity. Rather than imposing rigid rules that could limit experimentation, the policy framework aims to support responsible adoption and growth — positioning India to harness AI for economic transformation while ensuring that regulatory clarity helps, rather than hinders, long‑term innovation.
