Russia Accused of Using Generative AI to Spread Election Disinformation

Russia has been accused of using generative AI to spread disinformation during the 2024 US election. The Moscow-based Center for Geopolitical Expertise (CGE) allegedly oversaw the creation, financing, and dissemination of disinformation about American candidates, including deepfake videos created using artificial intelligence.

The CGE, affiliated with Russia's GRU foreign intelligence agency, used AI to quickly manufacture fake videos and created scores of fake news websites designed to look legitimate. They even paid US web companies to create pro-Russian content.

The US Treasury has imposed sanctions on the CGE and its director, Valery Mikhaylovich Korovin, for their role in spreading disinformation. The US government claims that Russia's actions were aimed at dividing the American people and undermining trust in US elections.

It's worth noting that Russia has denied any involvement in spreading disinformation, with a spokesperson for Russia's embassy in Washington stating that Russia "has not and does not interfere with the internal affairs of other countries".
