Saudi Arabia has officially designated 2026 as the “Year of Artificial Intelligence”, highlighting the country’s strong push to become a global hub for advanced technology and innovation. The decision was approved by the Saudi Cabinet as part of the country’s broader economic transformation plan under Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy beyond oil and promote digital development. The initiative reflects the Kingdom’s growing focus on data, technology, and AI-driven industries.
The announcement also emphasizes the role of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), which leads the country’s national AI strategy. Since its establishment in 2019, SDAIA has been responsible for expanding AI infrastructure, strengthening regulations, and supporting innovation in the field. The national strategy focuses on several pillars, including investment, talent development, policies, and the creation of a strong technological ecosystem.
Saudi Arabia has already made noticeable progress in the AI sector. According to global rankings, the country placed 14th worldwide in the 2025 Global AI Index and leads the Arab region in AI development. Investment in AI-related companies has also grown rapidly, with firms in the Kingdom securing around $9.1 billion in funding, demonstrating increasing confidence in the country’s technology sector.
By declaring 2026 the Year of Artificial Intelligence, Saudi Arabia aims to accelerate AI adoption across government institutions, businesses, and society. The initiative is expected to promote workforce training, increase productivity, and encourage innovation across industries such as healthcare, energy, and logistics. Through these efforts, the Kingdom hopes to strengthen its global position in the rapidly expanding AI economy.
