Saudi Arabia has launched a national initiative to train one million citizens in artificial intelligence skills. The "One Million Saudis in AI" (SAMAI) program aims to educate citizens of all ages and professional backgrounds about AI and its applications. Launched in September 2024 during the Global AI Summit in Riyadh, the initiative is part of the country's efforts to develop a skilled workforce and drive economic diversification.
The program offers training in data science, machine learning, AI applications, and ethical AI practices, providing participants with hands-on experience with technologies shaping the modern workforce. By raising public awareness about AI and supporting lifelong learning opportunities, the initiative seeks to meet the growing demand for AI skills in the labor market.
The SAMAI program aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 agenda, which focuses on developing digital infrastructure, research, and human capital. As of July 2024, 334,000 Saudi citizens have completed AI training under this initiative. The program has also led to the development of national AI capacity, with over 570,000 students trained on AI concepts through the "Road to ATHKA" initiative.
