San Diego State University (SDSU) is rolling out OpenAI's ChatGPT Edu, a higher education version of the popular AI tool, to its students, faculty, and staff. This partnership between the California State University (CSU) Chancellor's Office and OpenAI provides no-cost access to ChatGPT Edu, which offers premium functionality, enhanced privacy, and security features.
ChatGPT Edu is powered by GPT-4o technology, typically reserved for paid subscribers, and includes features like advanced data security, key privacy features, and the ability to build custom GPTs for sharing within campus workspaces. All personal and university data will remain within SDSU's Edu workspace and won't be used to train ChatGPT's public-facing large language model.
The rollout is part of SDSU's efforts to improve access to artificial intelligence tools and enhance career readiness for its students. With ChatGPT Edu, users can expect advanced capabilities such as data analytics, web browsing, and document summarization, as well as significantly higher message limits than the free version of ChatGPT.
SDSU has also developed an AI microcredential program to provide information on effectively employing AI tools and their ethical, responsible, and sustainable use. The program includes tailored versions for faculty, staff, and students.
