A seminar titled “Artificial Intelligence and Digital Immortality” was organised by the science club of CHMM College for Advanced Studies in Varkala as part of World Science Day celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram.
During his keynote, Gladston Raj S, Head of the Department of Computer Science at Government College Kariavattom, discussed the rapid advances in AI and introduced the provocative idea that humanity could be moving toward a form of “digital immortality” — where AI enables preservation or emulation of identity beyond biological constraints. He also acknowledged the dual faces of AI: the risk of job displacement alongside the generation of new opportunities for younger people.
The event was inaugurated by Sainulabdeen Poonthottam (Chairman of the Metca Group of Institutions) and presided over by L Thulaseedharan, Principal of the college. The organisers emphasised the transformative impact of AI on society and stressed the need for preparing students for both the ethical and professional challenges of an AI-driven future.
In sum, the seminar provided a platform for discussion on how artificial intelligence is reshaping human life, work and identity — from practical career impacts to deeper questions about mortality and digital self-preservation. The message to attendees: embrace the opportunities, but also stay mindful of the shifting ethical landscape.
