Small businesses are becoming an increasingly important part of the artificial intelligence revolution, yet they are often overlooked in discussions dominated by large tech companies and global corporations. A recent Fast Company article argues that small and medium-sized businesses should play a far larger role in conversations about AI transformation because they make up a major portion of the economy and employ millions of workers. Surveys now show that AI adoption among smaller businesses is rising rapidly, although many companies are still only scratching the surface of what the technology can do.
Research highlighted in the report reveals mixed but significant adoption trends. A Goldman Sachs survey of 10,000 small businesses found that roughly three-quarters are already using AI tools, with most reporting gains in productivity and efficiency. However, only a small percentage have deeply integrated AI into their core business operations. Other studies suggest adoption rates are lower among more traditional businesses such as local service providers, restaurants, and small retailers, largely because of limited technical expertise, time constraints, and uncertainty about the technology’s value.
Technology companies are increasingly targeting this underserved market with AI-powered tools designed specifically for smaller operations. Firms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Google, Intuit, and HubSpot are integrating AI assistants into accounting software, office platforms, customer support systems, and workflow automation tools. These services aim to help small businesses automate repetitive tasks, improve customer communication, manage operations more efficiently, and compete more effectively with larger enterprises.
Experts argue that the future success of AI transformation will depend heavily on whether small businesses can meaningfully adopt and benefit from the technology. While large corporations often dominate headlines, smaller companies represent a huge share of innovation, employment, and local economic activity. Analysts believe AI could help level the playing field by giving small businesses access to advanced capabilities that were previously available only to major enterprises. At the same time, business leaders warn that proper training, trust, affordability, and human oversight will remain essential as AI becomes more deeply integrated into everyday business operations.
