Supreme Court Reconstitutes AI Committee to Oversee Adoption and Deployment of AI Tools

The Supreme Court of India has reconstituted its Artificial Intelligence Committee to steer the adoption, development, and deployment of AI tools across the higher judiciary and subordinate courts. This move was announced by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant as part of efforts to modernise court operations and enhance the use of emerging technologies in the justice system.

The revamped committee is headed by Supreme Court Justice P. S. Narasimha and includes senior judges from several High Courts — bringing a mix of experience and regional perspectives to guide AI integration in judicial processes. It also has a tech specialist serving as Member‑Secretary and an expert from the Supreme Court’s e‑Committee as a special invitee.

The primary mandate of the reconstituted AI Committee is to oversee all initiatives involving AI systems and tools within the Supreme Court and lower courts, with the goal of improving efficiency, accessibility, and transparency in legal proceedings. The committee’s guidance is expected to shape how AI technologies are introduced, tested, and scaled across various judicial functions.

This restructuring reflects the judiciary’s commitment to leveraging AI responsibly while maintaining core values of fairness and justice. By institutionalising oversight and expert input, the Supreme Court aims to balance technological innovation with careful evaluation of risks such as bias, data privacy, and ethical impact, ensuring AI complements — rather than compromises — the legal system.
