Taiwan’s rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and semiconductor production is driving a massive increase in electricity demand, pushing the country to accelerate its transition toward renewable energy. To support AI data centers and chip manufacturing, the government and private sector have invested heavily in offshore wind farms and other green energy projects. These initiatives are central to Taiwan’s goal of sustaining its role in the global tech supply chain while reducing carbon emissions.
However, the green energy build-out has created significant challenges for some rural and coastal communities. In several areas, offshore wind installations and related infrastructure have disrupted traditional livelihoods such as fishing and oyster farming. Changes to seabed conditions, water flow, and construction activity have reduced yields and damaged ecosystems that local families have depended on for generations.
