The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced new rules for the 98th Oscars, which includes guidelines for films that utilize artificial intelligence (AI). The Academy has decided to allow films created with the assistance of AI to compete for top honors, but with a caveat.
The use of AI will neither help nor harm a film's chances of achieving a nomination. Instead, the Academy will judge the achievement based on the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship. This approach aims to balance the recognition of human creativity with the growing role of AI in filmmaking.
In addition to the AI guidelines, the Academy has introduced other changes to the Oscars rules. Academy members must now watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final round, and a dedicated streaming platform will track their viewing activity.
The Academy has also codified rules for the Best Casting category and updated eligibility requirements for the International Feature Film category. While some people have expressed disappointment with the Academy's stance on AI, others have welcomed the changes as a step in the right direction.
