To Avoid Legal Fees, Litigants Turn to Artificial Intelligence for Legal Memos

In the UAE, litigants are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to draft legal memoranda, contracts, and defense statements in an effort to avoid legal fees. However, legal experts are warning that using AI without proper supervision poses serious risks, particularly for individuals without a legal background.

The risks associated with using AI in legal matters are significant. AI systems can generate text that is not accurate or up-to-date, potentially leading to dismissed cases or forfeited legal rights. Furthermore, AI lacks the expertise and judgment of a human lawyer, making it crucial to have professional oversight. Additionally, AI platforms may be vulnerable to data breaches or cyberattacks, putting sensitive information at risk.

Despite these risks, AI can be a valuable tool in law. It can quickly retrieve relevant laws and precedents, streamlining the research process and providing well-structured answers to legal questions. AI also enables faster production and submission of documents, saving time and effort.

Abeer Al-Dahmani, a legal advisor, emphasizes the importance of human expertise in law, stating that "AI cannot replace the expertise and judgment of a human lawyer." She recommends using AI under the supervision of licensed professionals to ensure accuracy and precision.

To mitigate risks, law firms and organizations are developing governance frameworks and assessment processes for the safe and responsible use of AI. Some court systems, like the Victorian Supreme Court, have issued guidelines for the responsible use of AI in litigation, emphasizing transparency, responsibility, and caution. By using AI judiciously and under proper supervision, litigants can harness its benefits while minimizing its risks.
