The UAE is leveraging artificial intelligence to promote the Arabic language globally, with various state institutions launching AI-driven initiatives in publishing, education, lexicography, and creative content. A notable project is the Historical Dictionary of Arabic Language, a monumental scientific achievement completed by Sharjah that documents the evolution of Arabic throughout history with over 20 million words. The dictionary is now available in a GPT-enabled interface, allowing users to explore its vast database interactively.
Another significant development is Falcon Arabic, an advanced AI language model built on native Arabic-language data that captures linguistic nuances, cultural context, and regional variations. It competes with models up to 10 times its size and is optimized for performance with reduced computational load.
The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre has launched the Balanced Arabic Readability Corpus (BAREC) project, aiming to collect a 10-million-word linguistic corpus to support Arabic language learning and improve reading comprehension. Additionally, the Digital Knowledge Hub, a centralized platform for digital Arabic content, is run by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation. It features over 800,000 titles and 8.5 million digital assets sourced from 18+ libraries.
The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre has also launched a specialized digital dictionary employing AI and computational linguistics, covering over 7,000 contemporary Arabic terms with automated pronunciation, simplified definitions, and precise grammatical and semantic classifications. These initiatives demonstrate the UAE's commitment to preserving and promoting the Arabic language in the digital age, while also showcasing the potential of AI in language development and education.
