UAE-based Khazna Data Centers and Italian energy giant Eni have partnered to develop a 500-megawatt AI data center campus in Italy's Lombardy region. This joint venture aims to create Italy's first low-carbon AI data center, leveraging Eni's "Blue Power" technology, which utilizes a combined cycle gas turbine facility with CO2 capture technology to reduce emissions.
The data center campus will be located in Ferrera Erbognone, about 45 kilometers outside Milan. The initial phase will have a 500 MW capacity, with plans to expand up to 1 GW across Italy. The facility will be powered by low-carbon electricity, making it a pioneering project in Italy's decarbonized data center landscape.
This partnership combines Khazna's expertise in data center design and operations with Eni's leadership in sustainable energy. The project is part of a broader partnership between the UAE and Italy to boost digital infrastructure and AI capabilities. It marks a significant step in Khazna's European expansion and reinforces Eni's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
The project is expected to contribute to Italy's economic growth and position the country as a leader in Europe's tech and climate agendas. By integrating low-carbon technology, the data center will set a new standard for sustainable data infrastructure in Italy. This initiative highlights the growing importance of sustainability in data center development and the potential for innovative partnerships to drive progress in the field.
